Prospect Watch: After being shut out Friday, the Chihuahuas returned with a vengeance on Saturday night as they put 16 runs on the board. The offense was led by Rodolfo Durán’s cycle, which included a grand slam for a seven-RBI night. Durán, 27, also drew a walk on the day and is now hitting .371/.421/.600 in September. His .868 OPS for the year ranks fourth among Chihuahuas with 300 plate appearances. After the 5-foot-9, 185-pound backstop spent 2024 in the Royals’ organization he has been one of the Padres’ bigger minor league free agent contributors. Behind the plate, Durán helped guide Matt Waldron, 28, to one of his better starts of the year. Waldron used his knuckleball 50 times among 84 total pitches as he made it through six innings for the win. The 28-year-old, who only saw action in one game for the big league club this year after logging 146.2 innings last year, racked up 13 whiffs on the day. As is often the case, the rest of his arsenal played up with the knuckler taking a primary roll. … Luis Campusano walked four times and scored three times as the DH to extend his league-leading on-base percentage to .445. He now ranks seventh with 82 runs scored. … With two hits, Marcos Castañon, 26, pushed his slash line to .394/.474/.758 with six extra-base hits and 16 RBI in his first nine games with El Paso. It’s still a little perplexing why Castañon wasn’t up in Triple-A earlier in the year. … Clay Dungan, 29, moved into a tie with Tim Locastro for the team lead in stolen bases with 30 in 37 attempts. They are tied for seventh in the league.

Prospect Watch: San Antonio fell behind early for the third time in five games against the St. Louis Cardinals’ Double-A affiliate in Springfield, and trailed 6-0 after the first two innings. The game was never close after that, though the visitors were able to tack on one run in the fourth, and with two outs in the ninth inning, Eguy Rosario launched a three-run home run before Springfield closed out the game. It was the second homer of the series for Rosario, who also struck out three times. He now has five hits in four games, along with seven strikeouts. … Ryan Jackson had a nice night with three hits, including a double. The 23-year-old, the Padres’ 17th-round draft pick last year, has advanced through three levels this season, starting the year in Low-A Lake Elsinore. He began his collegiate career at the University of Nevada, Reno, before completing his last two years at the University of Southern California. He’s played all over the infield, but mainly at shortstop and even logged eight games in left field for the TinCaps this year. Like many players in their first full year of professional baseball, he’s hit a bit of a wall in the second half. His .860 OPS in the first half, which was fueled by exceptional walk rates, has faded to a .608 mark in the second. … In April, Garrett Hawkins, who was recovering from Tommy John surgery and adjusting to a new role in the bullpen, allowed seven runs in 12 innings for a 5.48 ERA. Then, the 25-year-old didn’t allow a run for more than three months, before finally allowing two in mid-August. Since the streak ended, he has allowed just one more run across 10 innings. Friday, he turned in his second straight two- inning appearance with only one runner allowed while striking out three. Texas League hitters have a .048 batting average against him for the month.
